I'm sure Howard Stern's people are speed-dialing

So there's this Christian pop singer cutie who's just come back from a seven-year hiatus to reveal she's gay. Unlike Ted Haggard, she's totally cool with her gayosity, so all props to her! But I wonder if the title of her new album Letting Go really means what she wants it to mean. Sweetheart, we're all very happy for you, but religion is not your friend! The hate you're about to get from those who pride themselves on how devout they are is something you just don't need. Just be proud you've found the music in you, and move on.

And according to your religion that will not keep you out of Hell.

  3. Is there a better word than "creepy" to describe a stranger's concern over another stranger's sexual practices? To reject a gay person's worth on a single, inherent criteria? Again I go back to thinking of a small tribe living in the bush somewhere casting away a tribesman for some superstitious "crime". To me, the analogy of a primitive tribe always seems appropriate to describe religion. Ignorant and inhumane.

  5. Actually my first thought was "Isn't this a trend now?"

  6. Religion is definitely not this woman's friend. The book of Leviticus calls for the death of homosexuals and there are plenty of fundamentalists who will either threaten her life or emotionally abuse her without an ounce of remorse or empathy.

@cam_layton: You're not the only one who feels that way.

  7. OMG followed a link in the cnn post to the "Gay Christian Movement Watch" (and yes they are as scarry as they sound)

according to a poster (Robert) you can turn homosexual:
"There are 4 things that turn a person homosexual. Every single person involved in the homosexual lifestyle suffers from at least one of these 4.
    1. Lack of Father either in the home or your dad bailed on you.
    2. Molestation
    3. Rape
    4. Feelings of Abandonment"

  9. TAC - small consolation: Gay women are off the hook. The OT and NT are absolutely silent about lesbianism.

"TAC - small consolation: Gay women are off the hook. The OT and NT are absolutely silent about lesbianism."

I'm sure that's covered by the "women are property" clause, where lesbians are not obeying their husbands and should be stoned to death. Of course, I imagine that wife on wife action (sanctioned by the husband) is permitted in the polygamous sects.

    George again:

"Not only gay... but tattooed! Is there no end to her violation of sacred law?!"

I think a lot of "angry atheism" comes from this sort of behavior, where many Xians are acting just like all the other sinners, f'rinstance a tattooed unmarried lesbian hottie wearing semi-provocative clothing, but they're still expecting that ticket to paradise at death.

In the GfNYRSV Bible, wife on wife action gets its own book. And two or three psalms.

...f'rinstance a tattooed unmarried lesbian hottie wearing semi-provocative clothing, but they're still expecting that ticket to paradise at death.

I'd say that's halfway to paradise right there. HEY-oh!

1 is roughly 1/4 of all americans.
2 and 3 is ad hominim.
4: is where the real meat comes in. You might as well say "has sometimes felt hungry".

Actually, I'm pretty sure its not smiled upon...which is why I quickly eschewed that theology.

  14. Not only is she gay but she's hot. If only she was single and lived in my town :( .

  15. @Norman Bates - nope, it's not any of those things that causes teh gay. It's obviously potatoes. In a completely unscientific poll, 100% of lesbians had consumed potatoes at some point in their lives. Coincidence? I don't think so.

  16. Gay men, on the other hand, prefer stuffing.

  17. @RationalJen

Does that mean potatoes are a gayteway food?

Oh wow thats awful. I renounce and reject myself for that one

  18. Jen,

Potatoes? Come on, we all know that engineer boots, flannel shirts and Subaru 4WDs make lesbians.

    I mean, that's just science.

    ReplyDelete
  19. But that means I can't be a lesbian then. No fair! Discrimination!

  20. @George - what exactly are "engineer boots?" I'm an engineer, but I didn't get any boots.

OTOH - I do have combat boots. However, any flannel I might have is likely used for polishing my non-4WD Honda. I see a few problems with your theory.

Potato Theory of Teh Gay = still valid!

This theory is so pseudo science it's laughable! Potatoes are NEW world vegetation, while Teh Gay has been well documented in as far back as ancient old world.

  22. Jen,

Engineer boots (aka Clompers, Biker Boots, etc.) was an East Coast/NY term for the heavy, black or brown boots which seemed to be so in vogue with lesbians here throughout the 80s and early 90s.

Along with short hair, plain-style 'masculine' eyeglass frames and Ani DiFranco records, engineer boots were a pretty reliable sign that the girl your buddy was about to ask out played for the other team, if you take my meaning.

There were exceptions, of course, especially once the 'lipstick' thing took off... but the boots were almost omnipresent.

However, any flannel I might have is likely used for polishing my non-4WD Honda. I see a few problems with your theory.

Potatoes are an epiphenomenon and do not contradict Boots Theory! Besides, what do people wear in potato fields anyway? Tennis sneakers? Bowling shoes? Manolos?

    Boots.
