Non-Prophets 9.6 is up

For your consideration.

Gia, Chris and I had a blast doing this. As there was no live chat involved, we'll just make this an open commentary thread about the show. (Also, here is a much lower bitrate version, as I didn't take into account just how huge the higher quality version is and I didn't know at the time what bitrate the guys usually use. So choose this one if you just want a faster download and don't mind some loss of fidelity.)

The last thing that sidewalk evangelists ever see...

  2. Well, add me on Facebook and do it there!

  3. Yeah, I've added a lower bitrate version so people can have the option of either.

  4. Nothing happens when I click the link :( When will the episode be up on iTunes?

  5. This is kind of fun. The gorilla Non-Prophets episodes are ever-changing. I'm not far into this one, but it's interesting. It's like Non-Prophets meets Skeptic's Guide; serious discussion with profanity and funny insults. Pretty good.

Way to go Martin, kudos for taking initiative! Maybe when the normal podcast starts back, you guys can have random special/extra episodes like this one.

And the guests are a nice change. You guys are great, but it does tend to get to be an echo chamber after a while.

  6. Suzanne: It should be up soon if not already. Have you tried right-clicking and selecting "Save link as..."

  7. I thing - I'm guessing - that the show it usually at 32kb, so it sounded just dandy at 64k. Nice job, folks! The musical bits and pieces were a nice touch too. You should appear on the Non-Prophets more often, Martin!

  8. I grinned and giggled at the heavy metal-esque opening.

    We are, "THE NON PROPHETS!"{echo}

Pretty wide array of topics but it kept things interesting. Thanks for the upload guys and gal :)

  10. Thank you Martin, Gia and Chris for this great "gorilla" episode.
I hope you do know that we want, or better said, need more. :D

  12. The Non-Prophets Radio site and the Atheist Experience TV show site are not accessible outside the US. This has been going for weeks now. I can only access the content through proxy servers. Can you PLEASE do something about it!?

  13. Caption is hysterical!

  14. Asko I'm in Denmark and can reach both sites with no errors. If I may ask, where are you located and what kind of error do you get?

  15. Martin on the Non Prophets?

Cool, I always like seeing you on the tv show.

I won't be able to hear this for a while, since I am working my way through all of them chronologically, and I am still in 2007, but I look forward to it (and to the show getting back on schedule).

  16. Hey, Love the show, great to see you guys trying hard to keep the show going - it's much appreciated :)

  17. @Dines: the country is Estonia and the connection simply times out. The only sites that do that are:

    http://www.atheist-experience.com/
    http://www.atheist-community.org/
    http://www.nonprophetsradio.com/

All of which I'm guessing are hosted by the same server provider.

  18. @magx01

It only took me two weeks to work my way through the archives. Fun times :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. @ Darren: 2 weeks?

    Wow.

It's been a few month long process for me, but only because I listen at select times.

Doing them all in 2 weeks is awesome :) Your brain must be swimming with npr quips.

  21. Martin, I hear you about the sense of community that the Internet has fostered in the atheist community worldwide. In the lead up to the Global Atheist Convention back in March here in Australia I made friends with a number of new people online who I then go to meet in person.

Many from different universities from around Australia (we formed a the new Freethough Univeristy Alliance http://freethoughtalliance.org.au/ ).

I was also lucky to meet the guys your mentioned from the Western Sydney Freethinkers, Allan, Rach and the MacAlpines! They're awesome people and having only met them the once like you feel a sense of community with them.

  22. The low bitrate version link is giving me a "Not Found" page.

  23. Tom,

That was my fault. I renamed the small version so that it was just http://www.nonprophetsradio.com/audio/The%20Non-Prophets%209.6.mp3. I wanted the smaller version to have the right name for the podcast. I've changed the original larger file to added http://www.nonprophetsradio.com/audio/The%20Non-Prophets%209.6_large.mp3 and made a second copy of the small version so that the link will still work.

Martin, for future reference, the small version is still bigger than our usual size, which is 40 bit encoding. I realize that as an arts guy, you would like to see the highest possible quality, but when it comes to podcasts, people who subscribe to a lot of them would rather save the space. And when you're just dealing with talking heads, most people really won't notice the difference.

  24. Yeah, I wasn't aware of what the proper size should be, so if I do another one I'll keep the main one small and probably make a higher bitrate version available just as an option for folks if they want it.

So is this ever going to end up on iTunes? And did you remember to add the artwork to the version that the feed picks up?

  25. I told Matt that the podcast needs to be updated. I asked him how I could do it, but he says he doesn't know if I can. So, just sit tight.

I don't know that you're allowed to use a separate picture for each episode; I think iTunes only displays a picture for the series.

  26. The RSS feed still needs to be updated. Thanks.

  27. Gia rocks. I don't remember having heard her before, or at least lately. Hope she returns to more future Non-Prophets or Atheist Experience shows! And thanks for doing these guerrilla shows while we wait for the main show to return!

  28. Great episode Martin. Well done!
Could you please post a link to Gia and Chris - to their blogs or Youtube accounts so I can follow up on them!

  29. Martin, sounds like your headset mic or other mic is too close to your mouth in this one. There's some distortion coming through with certain words. I use headphones to listen to the distortion from Martin is all too apparent.

Thanks for the show. Always fun to hear you guys and I love the 'PRATT' acronym.
