- The WikiPedia article on Prosperity Theology
- The Time article, "Does God Want You to be Rich?"
- Atlantic Monthly: "Did Christianity Cause the Crash?" (A better title would be "The Prosperity Gospel Contributed to the Crash--Should you Pick Up the Pieces?"
- Finally, Senator Grassley has done some investigation into these ministers, but it's not clear what will come of it.

Today's show: The Prosperity Gospel
Today, on the Atheist Experience, I'll be talking about the Prosperity Gospel. I thought I'd post a couple of interesting links about it, in case people want to explore on their own:

I'm looking forward to listening to it. I wondered what ever became of Grassley's investigation, if anything. I suspected all along it was just posturing.
ReplyDeleteThe prosperity gospel is the most obvious way for Christians to totally abandon any sympathy for the poor or oppressed. This is the religion of Republican capitalism. The poor deserve to be poor. The rich deserve to be rich. The rich are more righteous than anyone else. It's all part of God's plan.
ReplyDeleteAny philosophy that is as self serving as this one sickens me, and this is one of the worst.

The prosperity Gospel is one of the biggest bullshit ever. There is maybe one freaking thing clear from the Jesus character's opinions and it's that he didn't like rich people.
ReplyDeleteI took a walk after listening to your show... and found a $50 bill on the sidewalk! Thanks, TAE!

ReplyDeletePRAISE SATAN!
The whole concept is fraught with comedy ape floundering. I thought yall stepped up to the plate rather well.;
ReplyDeleteAfter all, your jobs are to point and laugh with surgical blood necessity.
Hi, I enjoyed the show, and would like to recommend Barbara Ehrenreich's latest book, Bright Sided, to anyone interested in this. It's subtitles "How the Relentless Promotion of Positive
ReplyDeleteThinking Has Undermined America" and looks at the positive thinking movement in cancer care, positive psychology, and the prosperity gospel. It's a very readable, well-reasoned, and skepticism-heavy look at the cult of positivity.
