One of the most frequently asked questions we get from AETV viewers is "Who does that kickass opening song?" to which we've replied, often, that it's by Canadian artist and AETV fan Bryan Steeksma. As your FYI post for Monday I direct you to Bryan's download-only album Residual Soul, available from CDBaby for $24.99, and from the iTunes store for only $11.99. So the choice there seems easy. Now, show fans may be disappointed that the album's generous track listing (31 songs!) does not include "Listen to Reason," which Bryan wrote just for us and for which he hasn't to my knowledge announced any release plans. But there ought to be enough there to satisfy your curiosity about this versatile godless rawker. And the album does include "The Galaxy's Elegant Cinema," which we used as the show theme last summer when broadcasting from Matt's apartment Dillahunty International Studios.

I got this a few days ago and it is definitely worth the price.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant, thanks for that. I knew his name by what it sounded like by no idea how to spell it.
ReplyDeleteI just went to iTunes and bought the album. My only sadness is that 'Listen to Reason' isn't on it, but I'm not complaining with the large number of tracks he has on it - it's like a double album!
Has anyone mentioned that the intro video is overly compressed vertically?
ReplyDeleteLike it was originally made full frame including letter-boxing in the graphic, and when you guys went wide instead of removing the built in bars it was just stretched out.
The same goes for the grey bar during the show, the height needs to be doubled.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about the intro vid but I'm not the guy who deals with the techie end of things (this would be a Frank question). We've also noticed a frustrating amount of artifacting in the image itself, which makes me think the file we got (at 720P) was compressed a lot when it was authored. It would be nice to get a full 1080I or 1080P uncompressed copy of it, but as I said, not my department.
ReplyDeleteOh I know, I was just starting to watch this weeks episode and thought I would pass it along.
ReplyDeletePerhaps the guy who rendered it needs to do another run for the widescreen version.
Good show so far :)
Though I should add that the intro vid was something, like Bryan's song, that a talented AETV fan did for us free of charge, so you know, gift horses and all that. What's important to note is that it's awesome so many people want to contribute like they do. We're lucky to have such great viewers!
ReplyDelete"We're lucky to have such great viewers!"
ReplyDeleteIndeed!
According to the Youtube user bryansteeksma "Listen to Reason will be available soon (once im done finishing the full version). May be offered as a bonus track, for free, when you buy my record 'Residual Soul'."

Martin,
ReplyDeleteSo that's what that song is. Good to know.
Speaking of music, would you please point Matt to this Wikipedia entry on the "Christianity Is Stupid" song he chose for the recent NP episode? He might find it interesting...

On of these days I have got to get my butt to the Austin environs and meet you folks.
Huzzah, etc.
Thanks for posting, I will have to check that out on Itunes. I follow the Atheist Experience as the episodes are posted on YouTube. All of you do a great job in bringing a rational outlook to the public.
ReplyDeleteThe album is a great deal. The songs I find myself primarily listening to are I'm the Satellite, Oblivion #2, The Galaxy's Elegant Cinema, and strangely enough... The Giant Song. The album starts of strong and then gets... Interesting near the end. Still, anyone here who hasn't bought this album should. 31 unique songs for 11 dollars makes for an amazing purchase.
ReplyDeleteMeh. I'm an atheist and Steeksma is just as lame to me as Christian rock, for largely the same reasons: boring composition and trite lyrics that are WAY too obvious with the message. No imagination. I can understand why other people might like it, but it's just not my bag. And I'm not going to like someone's music just because they're an atheist.
ReplyDeleteFor those of us who are Zune users, "Listen to Reason" is available on the Zune marketplace. I am not sure when it went up and may be on iTunes now, but I just downloaded it.
