She won't answer questions about her sexual preferences, but too-cool-for-the-room actress Jodie Foster doesn't hesitate a nanosecond to use the A-word in her latest interview. Though she admits she "loves religions and their rituals," being an atheist is nothing she needs to hide. Part of the fearlessness that's made her such a great performer, I'd say. (And smart enough to choose not to do Hannibal. Blech.)
PS: I do confess to a bit of gender bias in the headline, so I leave it up to Traci and our female (or gay male, for that matter) readers to choose the male H.A.E. I won last year so I'm out of the running, sorry.
Since that's the general pop trend, why don't we have a "Sexy Atheist" contest?
ReplyDeleteHell, it might work just for the sheer novelty of the idea. I'll even submit my completely non-sexy ass to start it off.
Even better, we could make it an "inner beauty" pageant, where each subject is judged on his/her beliefs and opinions rather than their outer beauty.
And, for the record, I've always considered Jodie Foster one of the more gorgeous actresses in the world (even though she did a so/so Southern accent in "The Silence of the Lambs"). Especially since her role in "Maverick" with Melvin Gibsteinberg.
I've heard rumours about this, but never really looked into it for conformation. Contact, though, is my favorite movie of all time, in large part because of her acting and character. Her character is, for the few who haven't seen the movie, an atheist, and a rather convincing one at that.
ReplyDelete(although, the book version of her character, and the story in general, is much better)

Ever you say? She's pretty good but it only took my wife and I five minutes to whip up this list of other contenders, in no particular order:
ReplyDeleteAni DiFranco
Janeane Garofalo
Eddie Izzard
Angelina Jolie
Bruce Lee
Julia Sweeney
Keanu Reeves
Uma Thurman
Natalie Portman
Seth Green
George Clooney
Billy Corgan
Bruce Willis
Lance Armstrong
Björk
Shirley Manson
Trent Reznor
and
Rebecca Watson
...oh, and Mother Teresa (for those with a nun kink)
I'd have Bjork high on my list too.
ReplyDeleteJodie gets points for actually speaking the Three Magic Words ("I'm an atheist.") to a journalist for a major magazine.
>And, for the record, I've always considered Jodie Foster one of the more gorgeous actresses in the world
ReplyDeleteShe is absolutely one of those rare natural beauties.
I've never thought about sexy male atheists. James Randi has always been my hero, so I have a soft spot there. But I'm not sure how popular he'd be with other atheist women?
Well actually, my friend Thad's wife Stacie, who is herself a hot model atheist (she's Miss September in the Skepchick 2007 calendar) thinks Randi is just the cutest thing ever. She told him so at TAM (it's hilarious; she towers over him by almost a foot), and the little fellow got all flustered, he did.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking about looking good -- I like the new look of this blog -- it's very clean and easy to read.
ReplyDeleteI have to disagree with much of your list there, derek, but that is not why I'm commenting. I definitely agree with the nomination of Trent Reznor and Bjork for hottest atheists ever.
ReplyDeleteJodie Foster is awesome but Bjork is just gorgeous.
Mother Teresa is hot too.
No one picked Sam Harris???
ReplyDeleteBrilliant, articulate, funny...hawt.
I've had an unrequitable crush on Jodie Foster for over 30 years but still I don't think I'd call her hot. Besides the hottest atheist probably believes in the power of crystals or something equally ridiculous. I'm more interested in finding the hottest rationalist.
ReplyDeleteI'll second (third?fourth?) a nomination of Rebecca Watson.
