Boston has the Irish Catholics but up north it is the French. It's not the custom for most people to be that vocal about what they believe. Churches for sure but no roadside mega-crosses and not so much on the radio. There is not much trust of "Flat-Landers" with something to sell.DavidCThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10567694912132966263noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33241741.post-610220718706934762009-10-30T09:12:50.082-05:002009-10-30T09:12:50.082-05:00While I have never personally been preached to on ...While I have never personally been preached to on the street, I always enjoy people handing out the flyers to passers-by. It's always amusing, either because the message itself is amusing or because it's amusing for me to just tear it up and throw it away the second they hand it to me.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10839067757555590716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33241741.post-51173174108707500632009-10-29T22:21:17.086-05:002009-10-29T22:21:17.086-05:00Makes me want to move to New England. I am stereotyping, but, don't most missionaries go to third world countries, hand out food, build churches so that children can go indoors, and generally bring 19th century luxuries to areas that would consider that an improvement?

Of course they're having problems now. the target is not "down on their luck". They aren't recovering addicts hoping for someone to fix their problems. And they certainly aren't hungry enough to sit through a sermon in exchange for a soft drink and prepackaged food.

So, now the "missionaries" have nothing to offer, except for their ideas...And they find their target audience to have no shortage of that either.Thomashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14299046445235601258noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33241741.post-4368141457740525962009-10-29T09:07:58.471-05:002009-10-29T09:07:58.471-05:00I live in New England and I think this trend is al...I live in New England and I think this trend is almost certainly one of identification rather than underlying realities.

This was a highly Catholic area and also one of the focal points of the priestly pedophilia scandal. Our local Cardinal, Bernard Law, was actually kicked upstairs as a result.

I think a lot of educated cultural Catholics who didn't really believe any of the nonsense got disgusted and embarrassed enough to not identify themselves as Catholic anymore.

Also if you're obviously from outside and obviously selling something with an obvious agenda, chances are we don't want it.
